Pencil2D is a lightweight app for creating hand-drawn 2D animations.

Install Pencil2D and check compatibility

Pencil2D is available for Windows 10, Windows 11, macOS, Linux, and FreeBSD. On Windows, the program comes as a ZIP archive rather than an installer. Extract the complete archive with the Windows Extract All option, then start pencil2d.exe from the extracted folder. Running the executable from inside the ZIP can cause missing DLL errors, including a message that Qt5Widgets.dll was not found.

If Windows reports that MSVCP140.dll is missing, run the included vc_redist.x64.exe. Keeping the application files together in the extracted folder helps avoid errors caused by launching it before the archive has been unpacked.

Start a frame-by-frame animation

After setup, Pencil2D provides a compact workspace centered on drawing and a timeline. Its minimal interface is suited to building an animation frame by frame: draw a pose, move along the timeline, and create the next drawing. This focused approach can help beginners, students, and hobbyists practice traditional 2D animation without needing to navigate a large collection of production tools.

Within a project, you can switch between raster and vector layers, using bitmap layers for sketching and vector layers for inking. This combination lets you develop rough drawings and cleaner line work in one animation. Pencil2D also includes onion skinning, which displays previous and next frames as you draw so you can compare poses and maintain movement between drawings.

Add movement, timing, and sound

A camera layer lets you pan and zoom the view across a scene, providing a way to change how a sequence is framed. A sound layer can hold audio so you can time animation to dialogue or music. These layers add basic scene and timing options while keeping the workflow grounded in hand-drawn frames.

When the animation is ready, Pencil2D can export it as a video file, an animated GIF, or an image sequence. The available formats support different uses: a GIF can present a short looping animation, while an image sequence gives you individual rendered frames. Video export provides a single file for viewing the completed sequence.

Scope and licensing

Pencil2D is open-source software released under the GNU GPL v2, also described as GPLv2, and is free to use commercially. Its lightweight design and core drawing functions make it a practical starting point for learning frame-by-frame animation. The trade-off is a narrower toolset: it does not provide bone rigging, automatic tweening, or advanced compositing, so projects that depend on those capabilities may exceed its intended scope.
